AAOS Recommends Laser Therapy as Treatment for Osteoarthritic Knee Pain

In their new guidelines, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) now recommends the use of FDA-approved laser therapy for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

This has been the AAOS’s first major update to their evidence-based clinical guidelines since 2013, which are made to help physicians form clinical treatment procedures. Since their last update, laser therapy has proven itself to be quite effective at treating the symptoms of knee arthritis.

After reviewing available scientific and clinical information, the AAOS concluded that laser therapy has been proven to improve pain and functions in patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. "Patients should expect to experience improvements in pain and function with the treatment,” stated the AAOS. They also reflected on laser therapy’s lack of serious side effects.

Committed to providing comprehensive care to help our patients, Arthritis & Sports is proud to offer our patients laser therapy in our Sterling clinic. Our MLS M8 Robotic Laser is one of the most advanced laser systems available today. This Class-4, non-invasive, fully-robotic laser is FDA-cleared to treat pain and inflammation for a range of orthopedic disorders and conditions, including:

  • Chronic or acute pain

  • Post-surgical recovery (also effective before surgical procedures and in conjunction with physical therapy)

  • Scar reduction and wound healing

  • Sprains, strains, bursitis, and tendonitis

  • Sports injuries (golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, repetitive motion injuries)

  • Radiculopathy

  • And so much more!

Now that the AAOS has given its nod to laser therapy as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis pain, we hope that even more patients will start benefitting from laser therapy's pain-relieving effects. There are further advantages to laser therapy, as it also helps release endorphins and stimulates the immune system to produce additional chemical substances that help heal damaged tissues.
